A Pair of Panels to go Either Side of a Door

This project was to create a pair of panels to sit either side of the front door of an imposing 1920s house. The client wanted panels that maximised light transmission but provided points of interest.

A range of patterns were researched and discussed and we found information on a set of windows in Villa Schiffer, Budapest. The building now houses the Hungarian Tax Museum but gets far more visitors looking at the windows!

A pattern was developed with the abstract birds of the original swapped for representations of British garden birds. The client enjoyed working out which birds should be included but we settles on Bullfinch, Bluetit, Wren and Robin. The flowers were also stylised and kept as identical repeats through the pattern.

All background glass is textured clear, with the main background being waterglass, the spirals are Corella and the edges are a 1/4” reeded glass. Each circle is different and some is reclaimed glass. The leads used are 8mm, 6mm and 5mm round H-section. .

The panels were fitted into black timber frames which sit in front of the existing uPVC framed windows.

After they were fitted, the client messaged to say ‘I’m so happy with the windows. I can’t stop looking at them!’
